Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The proliferation of digital media has had a profound impact on the way individuals interact, especially within families. In Kumbotso Local Government Area, Kano State, the use of digital media, including social media platforms, mobile applications, and messaging tools, has brought about changes in family dynamics, communication patterns, and relationships. Research by Olanrewaju & Adeyemi (2024) suggests that while digital media can help family members stay connected, it can also lead to disconnection and isolation due to excessive screen time and virtual interactions. As more households in Kumbotso gain access to smartphones and the internet, understanding how these digital tools affect family relationships has become critical. This study will explore the effects of digital media on family relationships in Kumbotso, focusing on communication, bonding, and overall family dynamics.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing use of digital media in Kumbotso, there is limited research on its impact on family relationships. While digital platforms offer convenience and opportunities for remote communication, they may also contribute to challenges such as the erosion of face-to-face interactions, privacy concerns, and generational divides. Moreover, the rise of online distractions and the time spent on digital devices may negatively influence family bonding. This study aims to investigate how digital media influences family relationships in Kumbotso and to explore both positive and negative effects on family dynamics.
